About MindRx

MindRx is the only platform completely devoted and focused on helping individuals overcome mental setbacks and challenges due to physical injuries and surgeries. Physical therapy strengthens the body as you recover, and MindRx strengthens your mindset to cultivate the mind-body healing necessary for an optimal recovery.

Mission & Vision

Studies among athletes have shown that “psychological factors play a substantial role in the recovery process.” Our mission is to provide more evidence based research and to ensure we equip all patients, not just athletes, with a vital tool that supports emotional and mental health while they are in their recovery process.

While injuries and setbacks are a part of life, they don’t define those who experience them. Our core belief is that recovery from injuries, while challenging, can also be an opportunity for growth in unimaginable ways. The “rock bottom” one might feel after an injury has the potential to be a turning point toward a profound experience that could be equally life changing for the better.

A Letter From The Founder of MindRx

"For the past 8 years I have worked as an executive coach, supporting CEOs, entrepreneurs and leaders as they experience life transitions and grow their businesses. That experience has given me a unique perspective on personal growth and development. I also have a clear sense of the process of recovery from injuries and how to make the most of them. Here’s the story of my two injuries and why I've decided to do things differently.

It was 6 days before Christmas and I spent the day skiing and hitting jumps with friends. The last one I hit I landed flat and felt the dreaded “pop” in my left knee. I was devastated, as it was early in the ski season, and my season was over. My son saw me in a wheelchair right after the accident and burst into tears. It was gut wrenching. I went through the usual recovery – lots of PT, rest, depression here and there, and a slow transition back to work. I swore I would do everything in my power to make sure I would never endure an injury again, and I made the most of the “down” time to focus on diverting my attention away from my woes. Doing this alone was incredibly challenging.

I went back to PT 10 months after my surgery, to ensure I was strong for the upcoming season. I had begun my season skiing and snowboarding very cautiously, gradually building up to my old pace. Sixteen months later, after my ACL tear, in March of 2023, the unthinkable happened again. On an icy morning I was snowboarding way too fast and I lost control on an icy slope. As I lay there helpless on the mountain I recall screaming out “not again!!” I knew something was wrong, and I had an idea what was in store for me. I ended up being diagnosed with a pilon fracture, a rare, high-impact break of the tibia and fibula, resulting in two trauma surgeries, lots of hardware implanted in my ankle, and over 2 months with no walking. The healing didn’t go as planned, and after 4 surgeries I didn’t feel like myself until almost a year after the incident.

My good friend Dr. Travis Maak stopped by to check on me and asked me how things were going. I told him the physical side was straightforward but I fought back tears telling him how tough the mental side was. He listened patiently and told me he hears this daily. It seemed to me that no one was addressing this critical aspect of recovery, and I was determined to do things differently, and perhaps help others along the way. I hired my longtime coach and friend Heather Hayward to help me shift my perspective. She gave me so many tools to help me get present and not miss out on the incredible life which was right in front me. As a result I had a great recovery experience - which did not go as planned from a physical standpoint- and gained tools that serve me to this day.

I am determined to provide to others the kind of support I had during my recovery. I would have never received those tools, or gifts, if I hadn’t had my injuries. I want to provide others with similar resources and tools, and always strive to make the experience of recovery more gain than pain."
